The Island in the Meuse (Maas River)
Together with Ohé and Laak, the fortified town of Stevensweert forms the 'Island in the Meuse', an island formed by two (former) arms of the river Meuse. The main stream of the river Meuse, on which Stevensweert is located, forms the natural marking of the border with Belgium.
Fortified town and fortifications
The original village of Stevensweert was converted into a fortified town by the Spaniards during the Eighty Years' War in 1633. An earthen rampart with seven bastions and five ravelins was constructed. Part of Stevensweert has a protected townscape. The fortifications can still be recognised in the town's unique street pattern. In the Regional Museum Stevensweert-Ohé en Laak, you can learn everything about the history of the fortified town. You can also view the model of the fortress, Stevensweert Castle and Walburg Castle.
What else is there to see in Stevensweert?
Just outside Stevensweert is the Hompesche Mill. This tower mill from 1722 is the highest mill in Limburg. At the nearby Molenplas with its petrified trees, you can take a lovely walk. Right next to the ferry across the Meuse is the Walburg castle domain. From the 10-metre high watchtower you have a wonderful view!
Murals in Stevensweert
At the initiative of the cultural-historical association Amici Insulae, three murals were created in Stevensweert. The association wanted to make the town's rich history visible to tourists and residents. Famous Dutch graffiti and muralist artist Marcus Debie aka GOMAD was hired for this monster job.
The mural on the side wall of the premises of militia company St. Rochus was the first to be applied in a militia theme. Next, the Battle of Stevensweert of 1702 was immortalised on a wall of the fortifications. Third was a painting on a historic building on Molenstraat Noord referring to the Hompesche Molen and the dredging works around the Island in the Meuse.
Hiking and cycling
Stevensweert lends itself perfectly for hiking and cycling. Well-signposted paths, ready-to-use hiking and cycling routes and a good network of junctions to create your own route make this area a great base for your cycling and hiking trip. Numerous cycling and hiking maps are available in the webshop or at the VVV branch in Stevensweert.

Nine times a year, the guide team of VVV Stevensweert organises a guided tours through the centre of Stevensweert and its surroundings. Various themes are highlighted by the guide during these city walks. You can sign up for these themed tours in our webshop. Group tours are also available all year round. Contact "Limburg groepsuitje" department and they will arrange everything else for you and your group.
