Walks in and around the 'Van Horne city' of Weert

On the website of Stadswandelingen Weert, you will find no fewer than fifteen different themed walks; ranging from the popular 'Centrumwandeling' to the 'Urnenveldwandeling' on the Boshoverheide. If you choose our newest walk, you will visit the Lichtenberg complex. On this site, at the edge of the city, the Episcopal College built a school complex with the appearance of a campus in the 1960s. The showpiece was undoubtedly the imposing De Lichtenberg amphitheatre, one of the largest in Western Europe. Currently, all kinds of plans are being developed to give this unique area a new, sustainable purpose. During this walk, the city guide will take you to places that would otherwise remain closed to you.

Two 'new' pearls

In 2022, the municipality of Weert gained two new pearls. In the forecourt of the former Nijenborgh castle of the Counts Van Horne, archaeological excavations were carried out. This allows us to further colour the history of this burial family, which was so important to Weert. The city park was redesigned as Kasteelpark Nijenborgh. With the equally popular 'Nijenborgh - Aldenborgh' walk, you visit this park and the story of the excavations is told.

The second jewel is undoubtedly Museum W. The old museum opposite St Martinus Church has been completely redesigned around the umbrella concept of 'Identity'. The special feature of the building's exterior is the completely new west facade fitted with Tecu Gold, an alloy of recycled aluminium and copper. This, combined with the historic south facade, gives the building a special look. We regularly take groups on a free 'flash visit' to the museum meant as an amuse-bouche to entice participants to explore the museum on their own later. Highly recommended!

Image of the past

Based on a photo from the past, Koos Neijnens, one of our city guides, writes a monthly column in the monthly magazine 'Weert Magazine'. All kinds of subjects pass by. But the common denominator is always 'Weert how it was and how it is now'.

Headsets

For a few years now, the city guides have been working with a headset during the walks. All participants are connected to the guide's transmitter via an 'earpiece'. Even in busy city traffic or when soft talking is important, for example in church, everything can be understood perfectly. This certainly also applies during our cycle tour through the green 'pie border' around Weert. While cycling, the guide tells us about the special landscapes we pass. The headsets are much appreciated by our guests.

See you in 'Wieërt, van Horne Stad'.
