A place full of magic
The pits ('koelen') were created by cutting peat. In bogs, dead plants form thick layers of peat after hundreds of years. If you leave that to dry, it makes a very suitable fuel. The Romans already knew that. Now the lakes are a paradise for rare plants and animals. Peat moss is the symbol of a cheerfully mobile life. With a veil of morning mist, this is a place full of magic.
Location
Park at castle Daelenbroeck. Go back to the Grootbroekweg. Turn right and at the end of the road turn left (Broekweg). At the end of the Broekweg turn right (Heikampweg). On the left you will see the Turfkoelen.
