Castle Montfort in central Limburg was built around 1260 AD as a fortress of Hendrik van Gelre. After phases of alterations, sieges, fires and also destruction by the inhabitants of Montfort, the castle slowly fell into ruin.
In recent years, two corner towers and several large cellars have been restored. One of the towers, the ´jachtslot´ (literally: the hunting lodge), harbours a visitor centre about the interesting history of this castle, its inhabitants and the surrounding landscape.
