Wessem is situated on the river Meuse in Limburg. In 1118 AD it already had a number of rights, including milling, fishing, the right to have a port, to charge toll and to mint coinage, which equal a town. This makes Wessem the oldest town in Limburg.
Due to its favourable location on the Meuse, Wessem has been trading on the Meuse since the Middle Ages. The market square with its original medieval design is a reminder of this.
