Guided Tours

This walk through Echt is entirely dedicated to Edith Stein, a Jewish-German philosopher who converted to the Catholic faith and was canonized in 1998.

Edith Stein was originally of Jewish descent. She converted to the Catholic faith and entered the Carmelite convent in Cologne in 1933. At the end of 1938 she went to the Carmelite convent in Echt in an attempt to escape the persecution of Jews. Her sister Rosa (by now also Catholic) followed a year later.

In 1942, the bishops of the Netherlands jointly wrote a letter denouncing the deportation of Jews. This was followed by a retaliatory action and Edith and Rosa were arrested by the Gestapo. Via camp Westerbork, they were transported to Auschwitz. A few days later they were gassed at Birkenau camp.

On this guided walk you will visit the Landricus Church, official place of pilgrimage for Saint Edith Stein, the chapel in the Carmelite convent and the devotion room for Edith Stein, among others
