The abbey church is a graceful legacy of 800 years of women in power. This is where the stiftsdames (canonesses) ruled.
The church is a gothic- style transept basilica with Roman west wing, dating from the 10th century. The interior is baroque and the church has a special group of baroque altars. One of the showpieces is the grand main altar. A crypt is situated under the presbytery.
The church was restored in the 19th century by the famous Roermond architec Pierre Cuypers. He demolished the spire of the abbey church and replaced it with a massive neo- Gothic bell tower.
