Carnival monument
What would that word mean? Five of Roerdalen's six church villages have such a carnival monument. Carnival is exuberantly celebrated here before Lent in a manner consistent with the Rhineland. Each carnival association has its own prince and a Council of Eleven. Eleven is traditionally the number of fools and madmen. Happiness is never far away here. Carnival stands for humour, freedom and fun. You can find the carnival monument on the green strip diagonally opposite St Matthias Church, on Nieuw Holsterweg in Posterholt.
