The Van Horne Dynasty in Weert: a glimpse into history

The Van Horne family was important to Weert. They came to the town in the 13th century and built Castle Nijenborgh. In 1450, they received the title Count from the then Emperor of the Roman Catholic Empire Frederick III. The last count, Philips of Horne, was a cousin of William of Orange and was beheaded in Brussels.

The Van Horne's had a great influence on Weert. They ensured the development of the town, including the construction of the Martinuskerk, the Minderbroedersklooster and the town hall. Weert even got city walls and gates. The Van Horne's legacy is still visible in Weert. You can see it in the buildings, the streets and even in the dialect.
