Excavations accompanying the Grensmaas project have revealed thousands of finds. Taking us straight back to the Middle Ages, to the Vikings.
In the year 810, Danish Vikings sailed 200 ships into Dutch waters! Late in the ninth century, Vikings from all around joined to form the Great Heathen Army. They sailed up the rivers, including the Meuse, robbing and killing.
Those were turbulent times. But a time of commerce too. The Vikings were great traders; they had a huge network. Some Vikings settled here on land that was given to them as fiefdoms. In fact, it’s said that the Dutch counts had Viking ancestors.
The discovery of a Viking axe is just one of the many spectacular finds that tell the story of the Meuse valley.
