Archaeologists moved in at Eerdweg in Beegden when construction work threatened to disturb the site. The excavations turned up a Late Roman treasure trove! The coins date from around 350-435 C.E. This is astonishing, since there is little trace of habitation anywhere in the Netherlands from this period. A complete cache of coins like this has never been found before in Maasgouw. This horde probably belonged to a travelling bronzesmith. That would explain the wide-ranging dates of the coins, the presence of a clipped coin and a bronze plate. The pieces were lying so close together that they had probably been in a leather or linen bag. The find includes 36 bronze coins, three of which show the Emperor Valentinian III.
