Church

The Gothic Abbey Church still dominates the skyline of the romantic, white town of Thorn. A graceful legacy of 800 years of female rule. Indeed, ladies of the highest noble rank ruled in the white town. The Abbey Church Thorn began as a monastery church after which it became a collegiate church and is now a parish church and museum.

History of the abbey church

The history of Thorn, also known as the 'white town', goes back as far as the year 975. Thorn used to be a source of prosperity for the entire region until the invasion of the French in 1794. But fortunately, the centuries-old charm can still be found in today's Thorn.

The Abbey church is a Gothic cross basilica with Romanesque westwork, dating from the 10th century. The interior is baroque with an imposing high altar. Under the presbytery is a Gothic crypt. The interior of the Abbey church was repeatedly remodelled between the 15th and 18th centuries. As a result, features from Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism are present in the church. Neo-Gothic architect P.J.H. Cuypers restored the south side of the church in the 19th century, installing a massive bell tower.

Burglars in the church

In March 2020, burglars smashed a hole in the display case of the treasury of the Abbey Church in Thorn and took away some precious liturgical objects. Fortunately, part of the loot was recovered during an arrest and the objects have since been safely returned to the treasury.
